ABOUT THE ARTISt

The Front is pleased to announce the opening of Wild Paradigm, multimedia artist Edmond Caputo's debut New York solo exhibition. Tinted with nostalgia, the works in Wild Paradigm evoke both the familiarities and often disquieting beauty of walking through a densely layered forest. In each large-scale work, the viewer senses a threshold, as branch elements, forged by the artist, form Rorschach-esque framing. The paintings echo with narrative, created during a time of deep loss and the resulting desire to be entrenched in memory: This body of work is steeped in the recollections of the forest walks of the artist's childhood, in the company of his late father, entered at the edge of their property -- there, a transformative portal into the woodland landscape, another realm.

The paintings underscore the subtleties of nature's sublimity with the ephemeral texture of marble and charcoal dust, each a material of deep, geological time. Built-up layers of glimmering, crust-like markings and patterns create a continued exploration of the work discernable of the natural world. These materials also activate the language of monochrome painting while tethering the works to the history of art making -- marble dust pays homage to the timelessness of marble sculptures and architecture, while charcoal has a longstanding record as a drawing medium.

In one work, titled Last Flowers, the artist incorporates a lace floral motif discovered among the perfectly preserved linens at his grandparent's house. Its presence in this painting is about holding onto and continuing lineage --- familial, but also the long tradition of bringing the natural world inside. The motif places the work in multiple histories, all seeking to bring close what nature holds.

Wild Paradigm opens the evening of June 1, from 6 - 8PM, and is on view until June 31.
